A leading global chemical manufacturer has made an outstanding return on investment while preventing a dangerous situation thanks to an imager purchased from CBT Company last year.
The Fluke ii910 Precision Acoustic Imager, which can detect partial discharge, was purchased by the manufacturer from CBT Company in 2022 to help inspect the manufacturer’s cables. CBT and the manufacturer have a partnership dating back to the early 2000s and CBT has become a trusted equipment source.
During the examination, a specialized inspector discovered partial discharge coming off a cable from a splice box that houses the cables. The individual used the imager to photograph the discharge, which displayed corona discharge working out of the cable. With the cable failing, the chemical manufacturer quickly acted, killing the line and cutting out the section of the cable where the failure was detected.
Upon closer inspection, the corona discharge was eating through the cable’s EPR insulation, which could have caused the cable to explode and take the production line out, creating a loss in production and profit in addition to being a safety hazard.
